The bastions of the Historic Fortified City of Campeche are fortifications built as part of a defense system against pirateattacks, which were a threat to the city during the 16th and 17th centuries. The bastions are massive stone structures, originally designed to protect the city, and today, some of them house museums and other cultural uses. Historical Context: Campeche was an important and strategically located seaport, making it vulnerable to pirateattacks. To protect the city, a wall was built surrounding thecity, with bastions at the corners and access gates.
