Congratulations. You’ve been hired as the night attendant at the Red Mesa Rest Stop, out along Highway 19. Your job is simple: keep the place clean, keep the lights on, and most importantly… follow the rules. Rule 1: The vending machines restock themselves at 2:17 a.m. Don’t watch when it happens. Rule 2: If a traveler bangs on the door after midnight, look at their feet. If you don’t see any footprints in the dust, don’t open it. Rule 3: The bathroom lights will flicker once every hour. When they stop flickering… someone else is inside. Rule 4: A gray sedan will pull in around 3:00 a.m. The driver won’t get out. Just wave. He’ll leave. Rule 5: Never use the payphone near the entrance. It only connects to one number — and it’s already called you three times tonight. Rule 6: Around dawn, the desert goes silent. No wind, no crickets, nothing. Lock the doors and face the floor. Don’t look outside until you hear birds again. Stay calm. Follow the rules. Good luck, Night Attendant.
