Chanco was a very traditional and friendly town. People loved to celebrate, dance, eat, and share with their families. Every February 2nd, the community celebrated the Feast of the Virgin of Candelaria in the old church of San Ambrosio. The church was decorated with flowers and candles. People sang, prayed, and walked in a long procession through the streets. After that, everyone met in the main square to enjoy music, food, and games. There were empanadas, mote con huesillos, and humitas, while local musicians played cuecas and folk songs. Also in February, Chanco held the Festival del Cantar Mexicano “Guadalupe del Carmen”, in honor of the singer from Chanco who became famous for her Mexican music. During this festival, artists from many regions came to sing rancheras. The plaza was full of people, lights, and music. Families danced, ate typical food, and watched the shows. It was one of the biggest summer events. In July, the town celebrated its Anniversary of the Commune with parades, local fairs, and folk presentations. Dancers performed cuecas, schools presented plays, and people sold cheeses, crafts, and traditional food. During September, Chanco enjoyed the Fiestas Patrias with patriotic parades, games, and Chilean traditions. People wore huaso clothes, flew volantines, and shared empanadas and anticuchos. There were also smaller events like the Cheese Fair, the Week of the Arts, and the Bean and Cochayuyo Festival, where neighbors cooked traditional dishes and showed local culture. All these celebrations showed how proud the people of Chanco were of their roots. Their music, dances, and food kept the spirit of the town alive through the years.
