Welcome to the harvesting and curing process of Virginia Tobacco. This is a critical stage that determines the quality, yield, and chemistry of the final product. Leaf Ripening generally begins about 15 to 20 days after topping. Before harvesting, the farmer must inspect the field for signs of ripeness. Look for yellowish-green leaves, a distinct clicking sound when detached, downward bending leaves, a whitish midrib, and complete detachment from the stalk. If these signs appear in two to three leaves across the field, it’s time to harvest. If not, wait until they do.
