At the global level, traffic accidents cause approximately 1.19 million deaths each year, and between 20 to 50 million people are injured, with pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists being the most affected—especially in low- and middle-income countries. In Ecuador, between 2011 and 2022, around 38,355 deaths were recorded due to traffic accidents, with an average mortality rate of 19.4 per 100,000 inhabitants, mainly affecting men, people between 25 and 40 years old, and those over 60. These figures highlight the severity of road safety issues both globally and nationally, as well as the urgent need for more effective prevention measures.
