Speech: "Ortiz Bridge, Living Memory of Cali" Dear citizens of Cali, visitors, and lovers of our history, Today we gather to honor a heritage jewel that has withstood the passage of time: the Ortiz Bridge, an architectural, cultural, and urban symbol that connects not only our avenues but also generations of Cali’s history. 1. Origin and heritage value It was built between 1835 and 1845 as the first masonry bridge in the city, designed to connect the downtown area with the north across the Cali River. This work marked a milestone in the infrastructure of the time, standing out for its solidity and beauty in a growing city. 2. Vision and civic spirit The bridge was completed in October 1845 under the direction of Friar Francisco Ignacio Ortiz, an enlightened man who dedicated his vocation not only to engineering but also to education and social progress. However, we must also acknowledge the work of José Montehermoso, the master builder who oversaw the entire construction, bringing fundamental dedication to the project. 3. Architectural evolution Over time, our bridge has been renovated to adapt to the city’s needs: In 1918, engineer Julio Fajardo Herrera expanded its capacity by modifying the roadway. In 1945, Alfonso Garrido Tovar added cantilevered sidewalks with semicircular viewpoints, giving the bridge the neocolonial beauty we know today while preserving its original arches. The bridge was adapted for vehicular traffic in the 1950s, but since the 1980s it has been pedestrian-only, following the people’s call to preserve its integrity. 4. Heritage uncovered In 2011, during works on Avenida Colombia, remains of the original 1845 bridge —walls and structural elements— were found just 20 cm below the surface. These were preserved in situ under a glass cover, becoming a valuable testimony to our history and ancient construction techniques. Research also revealed that the foundations included noble materials such as carved stone blocks and special lime-and-sand mortars, reflecting Mediterranean construction techniques. 5. Cultural and urban symbol Declared a Cultural Heritage Site by the Ministry of Culture in 2005, Ortiz Bridge continues to be one of the emblems of old Cali. It hosts cultural events such as the Book Fair and Christmas celebrations, consolidating its role as a gathering point and a source of civic pride. Its surroundings enhance its value: to the south lie the Poets’ Park, the Jorge Isaacs Theater, and La Ermita Church; to the north, City Hall—placing the bridge right at the heart of Cali’s heritage landscape. Closing words The Ortiz Bridge is not just brick and stone; it is the memory of an entire city. Its strong structure connects the past with the present, inspiring future generations to value identity, history, and public architecture. Today, we raise our voices to recognize it as a living part of our culture. Let us continue to protect, restore, and celebrate this bridge, which reminds us of where we come from and guides us toward where we can go. Thank you very much.
