DID YOU KNOW Giant pandas are fascinating creatures not just because of their adorable appearance, but also due to their unique biology and quirky behavior. One of the most interesting things about them is their diet. Although pandas are classified as carnivores, their diet is 99% bamboo. They consume an enormous amount daily—up to 38 kilograms (about 84 pounds)—just to meet their nutritional needs. However, their digestive systems aren’t actually designed for such a fibrous, plant-based diet. As a result, they don’t absorb much of the bamboo’s nutrients, and most of it passes right through them. This means pandas can poop as much as 40 times a day—a full-time job, really! In addition to their diet-related antics, pandas have some funny habits. For instance, to mark their territory, they use scent glands near their tails and will sometimes perform handstands to pee as high as possible on trees. This behavior helps them leave their scent in a spot that might seem more intimidating to others—because, in the panda world, peeing higher means more dominance. And did you know baby pandas are born extremely tiny? Despite how big adult pandas are, newborn cubs weigh only about 90 to 130 grams (3 to 4.5 ounces)—roughly the size of a stick of butter. They’re born blind, hairless, and completely dependent on their mothers, making panda parenting both adorable and intense. So, between the bamboo feasting, power-peeing, and butter-sized babies, pandas are basically the most endearing chaos you’ll ever see in the animal kingdom.
