Hi, my name is Valerie i’m in biomed i enjoy hanging out with friends, listening to music, and playing volleyball. The book I chose for summer reading is Under the Surface by Diana Urban. It’s a short novel about a girl named Ruby who goes into the Paris catacombs with her friends. At first, it seems like a enjoyable class trip, but it quickly turns into a life or death situation when they realize they aren’t alone down there. What I liked about the book is that it mixes suspense, secrets, and danger all in one story. The setting, the underground catacombs, really adds to the creepy and trapped feeling. One of the biggest themes in the book is how guilt and secrets can haunt people just as much as the dangers around them. For my project, I created a playlist of three songs that connect to different parts of the novel. The first song I picked is “Haunted” by Beyoncé. It connects to Ruby and Selena’s broken friendship, since Ruby feels haunted by guilt about their falling out. The mood of the song also matches the empty atmosphere of the catacombs. My second song is “Lights Out” by Royal Blood. This shows the fear and pressure Ruby and her friends feel while trapped underground. The lyrics about darkness and feeling caged relate both to Ruby’s inner conflict and the physical tunnels. The last song I chose is “Secrets” by OneRepublic. Secrets are a huge theme in the book, and when the characters’ secrets start coming out, it creates even more conflict and danger. This song captures how secrets can be just as threatening as the tunnels themselves
