The history of Jagannath is complex, blending a tribal origin story with Hindu theology, where he is considered an incarnation of Vishnu. Legends state he began as a tribal totem, later associated with the Nilamadhava form of Vishnu, and ultimately became the divine sibling trio (Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra) carved from a sacred wooden log after Lord Krishna's heart was found floating at the Puri shore. King Indradyumna later built the first temple for these wooden deities, establishing a tradition that continues to this day.
