On May 3, 1982, while the Ensign Sobral was being attacked by British helicopters and subsequently hit by missiles from a safe distance, a missile impacted the command bridge, causing his death in action along with several crew members, including Chief Petty Officer Mario Rolando Alancay. Gómez Roca thus became the first commander of the Navy to die at his command post since the War of Independence.
