I grew up in a place where magic is not separate from reality, but woven into it. The coexistence of multiple belief systems, timelines, places, climates, ecosystems and histories creates things that exist because this land is unlike anywhere else. In Colombia, we move according to a principle that Gabriel García Márquez captures perfectly in One Hundred Years of Solitude: "Things have a life of their own," "It’s simply a matter of waking up their souls." Magic and history live in the everyday, in the ordinary, in the landscapes, and in popular beliefs.
