Not content with expressing his enthusiasm for the country's customs by always carrying an umbrella, a white hat, and inevitable gaiters, he aspired to be an Englishman in his tastes, customs, and attire. Finding our people distinguished by their love of sports, the little man naively became passionate about all our entertainments and games, joining in whenever he found an opportunity, firmly convinced that he could adopt our national amusements through an effort of will, just as he had adopted the gaiters and the white hat.
