Soon after returning home, Martin fell gravely ill. His doctor diagnosed stomach flu. However, Martin's father-in-law, John Davies, a local pharmacist, held a different suspicion. He recalled selling a significant quantity of arsenic to Armstrong, who claimed it was for his dandelions – despite it being autumn and the garden having few weeds. Davies grew more suspicious when Martin mentioned the tea at Mayfield, especially given the similarity of Martin's symptoms to those Catherine Armstrong had exhibited.
