My first near-death experience happened on January 2nd, 2003. On New Year’s Eve of 2003, I checked into the hospital. I’d been having flu-like symptoms for several days, and they weren’t improving. I’d tried everything I knew how to do—chicken soup, water fasts, all those things—but my health wasn’t getting better. I called my mother on New Year’s Eve because, back then, New Year’s Eve was always special for me. I loved going out, celebrating, bringing in a new year and a "new me." So, being sick and unable to do anything really bothered me. I wanted to get over this fast.
