Step three is Story. Tether the moment to a story and a virtue. It doesn’t need to be long. Just ten seconds is enough. You could say, In our family we practice patience like Toby in the Forest Race — slow, steady, strong. Or, Remember Noah who waited while God kept His promise? We can wait too. Or, Jesus is gentle with us. Let’s be gentle with each other. Stories bypass resistance. Kids step into them instead of pushing back. At bedtime you might say, Remember Toby? Slow and steady, one step at a time. In the middle of a sibling squabble you could remind them, The Good Samaritan stopped to help. We can practice kindness like him. When you give a story, you give your kids a picture they can live into. And trust me, that works far better than the time I tried, “Because I said so, I’m the boss.” Spoiler alert, that one didn’t stick.
