The Holocaust happened during World War II, from 1939 to 1945, under the leadership of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in Germany. But its roots started earlier, when Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933.
The main reason it happened was hatred and false beliefs. The Nazis believed that some people were “superior” and others, especially Jewish people, were “inferior.” They wanted Germany to be racially pure, meaning only people they considered the “right race” should live there. They also blamed Jews for Germany’s problems after World War I, even though that was completely false.
Once Hitler came to power, he began passing laws to discriminate against Jewish people and other groups. In 1935, the Nuremberg Laws made this discrimination official. Jews lost their citizenship, could not marry non-Jews, and were banned from certain jobs.
In 1938, during Kristallnacht, or the “Night of Broken Glass,” Jewish homes, shops, and synagogues were destroyed across Germany and Austria. Many Jews were injured, arrested, or killed.
When World War II began in 1939, the Nazis occupied many countries in Europe. They forced Jews into ghettos, crowded and poor areas where survival was extremely difficult. From 1941 to 1942, the Nazis began the Final Solution, a plan to systematically kill millions of Jews, Roma people, disabled individuals, and others they considered “undesirable.” Millions were sent to concentration and extermination camps such as Auschwitz, Treblinka, and Sobibor.
By the end of the war in 1945, six million Jews and millions of other innocent people had been murdered. The Holocaust is remembered as one of the darkest events in human history.
It shows us how hatred, racism, and silence can lead to unimaginable suffering. It also teaches us why it is so important to stand against discrimination, value human life, and practice kindness and empathy.
Even though it happened many years ago, the lessons of the Holocaust are still very relevant today. By learning about it, we can help prevent hate and injustice from happening again.
