I think about the weight of history and how it lands on the shoulders of mothers who just want their children to be safe. It’s a fear that’s deep, it's visceral, and it’s something that we, as a society, really, really need to acknowledge if we ever want to see real change.

You know, when I talk to other mothers about their experiences, I really, really see how different our journeys are. Some of us can let our kids play outside without fear, while others... others have to have those hard conversations from day one. That's not right, it's just not right.

When I look at my daughter growing up in this world, I feel both hope and fear. I want her to be strong, but I also know the reality of being a woman of color. Every morning, I pray for her safety, just like generations of mothers before me.
