When we talk about access to healthcare, we really, really need to understand that it's not just about insurance. It's about generations of women, especially women of color, facing barriers, feeling unseen, having their pain dismissed in ways that we haven't experienced.

You know, when I look at my kids growing up today, I see both hope and fear. I want them to live in a world where they're truly free, but I also understand the weight that comes with being a mother in this society, especially when your children face different challenges.

In a quiet corner of Nilphamari, Mohiton Begum’s life changed in the blink of an eye. A simple fall from a chair broke her hip — and from that day, she could no longer stand or walk. With no money and no safe toilet, the family did their best. They had to borrow a chair from neighbors, and dig small pits to manage her daily needs. The old toilet was broken, unsafe, and full of risk. During the rainy season, the situation became even worse for this poor family.

When you really, really look at how we raise our children today, there's still this divide. I see it in the playground, in schools, in everyday moments. As a mother, it breaks my heart that some parents still have to teach their kids different survival rules than others.

I look at my children and realize that my job is to protect them while acknowledging the world they walk into is different. We really, really need to understand that history of fear and do better. It’s about finally listening to those mothers who haven’t been able to just breathe.

When I look at my daughter in school, I see all our children trying to navigate this world. We have to fight for their safety, their dignity, their future. Every mother knows that fear, that constant worry, but for mothers of color, it's a different level of awareness.

As a parent, you want to build a world where your children can just be kids, but for so many mothers, that's a luxury they've never, ever had. It’s a weight, a deep-seated fear that spans generations, where you’re constantly fighting to protect them from things they should never face.
