One of my first memories from childhood are of my doll cradle in which my fancy dolls with faces made of wood were put. I had a beautiful doll carriage that I strolled with my favorite dolls. My doll carriage and my bicycle were kept in the basement storage room of the apartment. I had to walk past a fire furnace to get to them. Sometimes there were stray cats in my carriage or dead frozen ones in the alley.

When I was young, maybe about sixteen or so, I worked in the local store, and the people there were very, very kind to me. But things were different then, you see. We didn't have all these modern conveniences, and we worked very hard, every single day.

Just got back from the doctor's office, you never know these days, you never know. Me trying to remember all my medications at my age, imagine that, like trying to solve a puzzle with half the pieces missing.

I remember the winters at the crossing, when the snow fell so thick it silenced the very earth. We had little but the warmth of the hearth and each other's stories. You young ones see a fast world, but don't forget the steady strength of the ground beneath you.

Time has a funny way of slowing down now that I am older. I find myself remembering the sharp sound of the screen door slamming when the children were small. It is those quiet, little noises that fill up the empty spaces in my heart these days.

I remember when we lived in the old house, and the winters were so, so cold. The children would gather around the wood stove, and we'd tell stories while working on our mending. Those were different times, very different from today, but we managed just fine.

I remember when I was just a young girl, maybe seven or eight, there was this lovely old general store in our town. Mr. Thompson, the shopkeeper, was such a kind soul. He would always give us children a piece of candy when our mothers came to shop.

You know, back in '72, something funny happened during basic training. Our sergeant was so serious about inspection, but my buddy Tom had accidentally put his boots on backwards. Everyone tried not to laugh, but boy, that memory still makes me chuckle today.
