THE VOICE BEHIND THE DOOR
They say old houses keep memories… but mine keeps something else.
Something that should have never stayed here.
It all began on a night when the power went out. I was alone.
The silence felt so heavy it almost had a shape.
I walked toward the living room with my phone barely lighting the way… and that’s when I heard it for the first time.
A whisper.
Soft.
Coming from the storage room door, the one room I almost never opened.
— “Ale…?”
My name. Clear. From behind the door.
I froze. I tried to tell myself it was a sound from outside, or that my mind was playing tricks on me. I got a bit closer… and the wood vibrated, as if something was standing on the other side, pressing its forehead against the door.
— “Open it… please.”
The voice was weak. Like it had been trying to speak for hours… or days.
A shiver ran down my spine. It couldn’t be anyone. No one else had a key. No one was in the house. And yet… that voice knew my name.
I placed my hand on the doorknob. It was ice cold.
Then I heard it — a scratch. From inside. Slow. Dragging. Like nails… moving across the wood.
I backed away and ran to my room. Locked myself in. I didn’t sleep at all.
The next morning, when I finally dared to check, I opened the storage room. Everything looked exactly the same. Nothing out of place. Silence.
But the door had marks. Three long scratches, like something was trying to get out.
I tried convincing myself it was an animal… a cat… anything.
But that night, it happened again.
It was 2:13 a.m.
I was close to falling asleep when I heard footsteps. Slow. Dragging. Bare feet on the cold floor.
They stopped right outside my bedroom.
And I heard the same voice. Clearer. Closer.
— “Ale… I opened the door.”
My heart stopped.
I didn’t want to look.
I didn’t want to move.
I didn’t even want to breathe.
The doorknob of my room turned. Slowly.
Once.
Twice.
Then… from the darkness of the hallway… a soft knock against the door.
Tap.
— “I can see you from underneath…”
I looked at the gap between the floor and the door.
And there, in that tiny space… fingers slid through.
Long fingers. Too long to be human.
Moving, searching for me.
I stumbled backward, screamed, and ran to the window. I was ready to jump if I had to. But when I glanced back at the door… the fingers were gone.
Silence.
Then I heard footsteps going back down the hall… returning to the storage room. And its door closed by itself with a sharp slam.
Since then…
Every night…
At the same hour…
The voice calls my name again.
And last night, for the first time, it didn’t come from the hallway…
It came from inside my room.
The molecular patterns are dispersed through the gradient field, allowing for systematic observation of their behavioral indices. This distribution enables precise measurement of structural variations across multiple spatial dimensions.
