As squeezing is a natural, intuitive gesture for relieving distress, which is typically used as a physical pain intervention to squeeze away discomfort psychologically. In our study, we shift the role of the stressball as an interaction for the user to engage others' pain from passive observer to active helper. By using this, we enable a possibility to measure how much effort someone is willing to help another in pain.

We implemented this ball device and tested the physical effort concept with a “pain relief” scenario. Participants wearing a VR headset encountered a virtual person with pain expression. They held the stress ball and were told that squeezing it would ease the character’s pain. The harder they squeezed, the less pain the character showed. If they release the ball, the pain returns. This setup encourages users to actively “squeeze the pain away.”

Here are techniques behind our interaction design. In terms of the ball, we built a custom wireless squeeze-ball system using an MD30-60 pressure sensor and a XIAO ESP32S3 chip with WiFi module for stable data transmission.

In virtual environment, we implement pain scenario with virtual character and VRsystem control. Eye-tracking was used to collect data. We used Character Creator 4 to create 3D model.

Here are the pain animation examples which were mapped from the left real videos (from P E M F database) to virtual character animation which drive by A R Kit blend shapes. In the creation of pain blendshapes, we referred to the Facial Action Coding System (FACS) and the PSPI pain scale based on this system. When analysing pain-related eye-tracking data, we also considered facial regions based on the scale such as frowning, nose wrinkling, and mouth opening.
