kewal pakhrin에 의해Today, the Directorate of Fisheries, under the Department of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Government of Sikkim, organized an awareness program on 'responsible angling' at River Rangeet, Baguwa ward in Namchi district.
The event saw the participation of the Minister of UDD and F&CS, Bhojraj Rai, who led the ranching of 500 Chocolate Mahseer, Sikkim’s state fish, to mark the 50th anniversary of the state's formation. The Minister of A&HD, Puran Gurung, along with several other dignitaries, joined the initiative.
The event also featured an angling competition with 40 participants from Sikkim and North Bengal, aimed at raising awareness about fish conservation. Ugen Tsheten Bhutia, AD, Directorate of Fisheries, emphasized the impact of pollution, illegal quarrying, and global warming on the region's fish populations.
The Fresh Water Angling Association of Sikkim raised concerns about the alarming decline of indigenous fish species, with 24 out of 48 species now in danger. They pointed out issues like chemical discharge and electric fishing that are harming aquatic life.
Minister Bhojraj Rai highlighted the importance of ecological conservation and suggested fisheries as a potential career path for students. Secretary Roshni Rai stressed the government's commitment to preserving Sikkim's aquatic life.
The program also addressed broader social issues, including anti-tobacco awareness, mental health, and the Swaccha Bharat Abhiyan.
