The qualities of a true pastor
Below are some essential qualities that you must look out for in a minister who can add value to your life.
1. He must be called by God, and not be a self-styled pastor.
2. He must belong to a well-recognized church governing body or denomination
3. He must be trained.
4. He must be under authority e.g. Jesus was under the authority of the Father and Paul was subject to the Council of Jerusalem. (Acts 15)
5. He must be accountable to his spiritual authorities and church council.
6. He must be Word-based
7. He must be prayerful and be filled with the Spirit.
8. He must be a continuous learner.
9. He must have sound doctrine.
10. He must have financial discipline.
11. He must have an organized family life; his family must be orderly.
12. He must have character, not only charisma.
13. He must not be a novice; not a recent convert.
14. He must not be a spiritual rebel or a church-splitter who breaks other people’s churches to form his own.
15. He must be a blessed, not a cursed pastor.
16. He must be one who pays his tithes faithfully.
17. He must be one who honors his special authorities and stays at peace with them.
18. He must be lazy in doing God’s work.
19. He must not use false balance for ministry
20. He must have respect for all laid-down organizational structures and rules.
21. He must be Christ-centered not devil-centered. He must not talk more about what the devil is doing than what God is doing.
22. He must not be covetous, not a lover of money, not desiring the office for the sake of personal gain.
23. He must have a good report with outsiders.
24. He must be a worthy example unto others.
