Once, a sparrow was looking for a safe place to build her nest and lay her eggs. She flew from place to place until she saw two big trees standing near a river.
She flew to the first tree and asked, “Dear Tree, may I build my nest on your branches? I need a safe home for my eggs.”
The first tree replied rudely, “Go away! I am big and strong, and I don’t want birds disturbing me. Find another place!”
Feeling sad, the sparrow flew to the second tree and asked the same question.
The second tree smiled gently and said, “Of course, little bird. You are welcome here. My branches are strong enough to hold your nest, and I will keep you safe.”
The sparrow was very happy. She built her nest, laid her eggs, and took good care of them. After some time, the rainy season came. It rained heavily for many days, and strong winds blew everywhere.
The first tree, which was proud and selfish, had shallow roots. The wind and rain became too strong for him. He fell down and was carried away by the flowing river.
The sparrow saw this and thought, “He was so proud and refused to help me. Now look at him!” She flew near the fallen tree and said, “You thought you were strong and great. But now you are gone, while I am safe and happy here!”
The fallen tree replied softly, “Little bird, do not judge me. I knew my roots were weak. That is why I refused to let you build your nest on me. If I had said yes, you and your babies would have fallen with me and died. I wanted to save you, not hurt you.”
The sparrow felt ashamed. She realized she had misunderstood the first tree. She thanked the second tree for his kindness and learned a great lesson: Don’t judge others too quickly. Sometimes what looks like unkindness may actually be a form of care and protection.
