Today, we follow Dr. Jose Rizal during his travels in France and Belgium, a time filled with learning, struggle, and distant love.
In Paris, France — March 1889
Rizal arrived in Paris after leaving London. At first, he stayed with Valentin Ventura, and later moved into a small room with fellow Filipino student Jose Albert.
In the heart of Paris, Rizal visited the Bibliothèque Nationale, where he spent long hours working on his annotation of Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas — a text he believed would awaken pride and awareness among Filipinos.
During his stay, Rizal also spent time with friends such as Juan Luna and Paz Pardo de Tavera, exchanging conversation filled with hope and patriotism.
He witnessed the Universal Exposition of 1889, where the grand and glittering Eiffel Tower stood as the marvel of the world.
In Paris, Rizal formed the Kidlat Club, bringing Filipinos together in fellowship and shared purpose.
He also helped organize the Indios Bravos, a group created to prove that Filipinos could excel in intellectual and artistic fields.
Furthermore, he supported the Rendición de los Malayos, an organization focused on spreading useful knowledge and uplifting Filipino identity.
For Rizal, Paris was not merely a city of beauty—
it was a place of work, purpose, and awakening.
