Happy 20th birthday, meri chhoti behen. ❤️
I know this birthday feels nothing like it should. Five years ago, when I left for Canada, neither of us knew that goodbye would become our last. I thought I would come back, we'd meet again, I'd annoy you, we'd laugh and fight like always. But life had other plans, and that fatal accident took me away.
I know you're hurting now, especially because the ceremonies are over and everything has suddenly become quiet. You were so brave through everything—standing beside Mom and Dad, handling things while your own heart was breaking. I'm so proud of you.
But Hir, you don't have to be strong every moment. Cry when you miss me. Talk about me. Look at our pictures. Let yourself grieve. You don't have to "get over" me. I'm your brother—you'll always carry me with you.
But please don't carry the pain forever.
I don't want you to stop living because I had to stop.
You're only 20. Your whole life is still waiting for you. Study, work, travel, fall in love when you're ready, make mistakes, laugh loudly, chase your dreams, take care of Mom and Dad—but please take care of yourself too.
And when happiness finds you again, don't feel guilty for accepting it. Your smile will never mean you've forgotten me. Moving forward will never mean leaving me behind.
Some days you'll be okay, and some days you'll miss me terribly. That's okay. Grief comes in waves. Just keep taking one day at a time. If it ever becomes too heavy, ask for help. You don't have to carry everything alone.
Please don't let the worst day of your life become the rest of your life.
Remember me not only as the brother you lost, but as the brother who loved you, teased you, worried about you, and wanted the best for you.
And whenever something beautiful happens, tell me about it in your heart.
I want you to have the beautiful future I didn't get the chance to see.
So on your 20th birthday, my only wish for you is this:
Live fully. Love deeply. Laugh again. Dream without fear. And be happy without guilt.
I'm proud of you, Hir.
Happy birthday, my little sister.
I love you. Always.
