Good morning everyone. For my part, I will explain how Tony Fernandes applied organisational leadership theories and management principles to transform AirAsia. AirAsia uses a functional organisational structure, where each department has a clear role and responsibility. The Executive Management team focuses on vision and strategy, while departments such as Engineering, Operations, Marketing, and Digital Division support the company’s daily performance and long-term growth. This structure helps AirAsia operate efficiently because every department focuses on its own specialised function. For example, the Operations Division manages flight scheduling and aircraft turnaround, while the Engineering Division ensures safety and technical reliability. At the same time, the Digital Division supports innovation through digital services and the AirAsia Super App. Tony Fernandes also applied Fayol’s management principles, especially division of work, unity of direction, and discipline. These principles can be seen through AirAsia’s clear departmental roles, coordinated direction, and strong focus on operational performance. Besides that, Taylor’s Scientific Management Theory is also reflected in AirAsia’s business model. Taylor emphasised efficiency, productivity, and cost reduction. AirAsia applies this through standardised operations, quick aircraft turnaround, and efficient resource usage to maintain its low-cost strategy. Fernandes also demonstrates Mintzberg’s Managerial Roles. As an interpersonal leader, he motivates employees and builds strong relationships. As an informational leader, he communicates the company’s vision clearly. As a decisional leader, he makes bold strategic decisions, such as expanding routes and investing in digital transformation. In addition, Fernandes practises servant leadership by encouraging open communication, teamwork, and employee empowerment. This creates a more inclusive culture where employees feel involved and motivated to contribute to the organisation. Overall, AirAsia’s success is not only because of its low-cost model. It is also supported by an effective organisational structure, strong leadership, and practical application of management theories in real business operations. Thank you.
