You see, back when I was young, very young, we lived in that small farming community. The neighbors, they were all good people, but times were different then. We worked in the fields, all of us together, and the children, they learned early about hard work and responsibility.

Forty-nine winters I've watched this post, through rain and snow. Never saw much action, just quiet nights and morning frost. Tomorrow, I'll hang up my uniform for the last time, and these memories will be all mine.

When I was young, we had this neighbor, very, very kind woman. She would come over and help with the garden work, and her children played in our yard. But times were different then, and people worked harder in those days, helping each other more.

I want to thank y'all for coming out tonight to hear these old songs. My heart is full seeing my wonderful band up here, and especially having my family in the front row. Been blessed to make music for over 50 years, and couldn't have done it without the good Lord and all of you.

You see, back when I was young, there was this family living next door, very, very different from the rest of us. The mother worked so hard, taking care of five children all by herself. People in town would talk, but she just kept going, doing what she had to do.

I remember that first winter in the field, wasn't much prepared for it really. We had these thin jackets, and the cold just cut right through. Some nights we'd just sit there, watching our breath freeze in the air, wondering when morning would come.

I remember when we had this old tractor, must've been around '52 or '53. My father would let me sit on his lap while he plowed the south field. There was this one time the wheel got stuck in a ditch, took us nearly half a day to get it out.

Back then we didn't have much choice, you see. Had to walk three miles to school, rain or shine. Worked the fields after class, helping with the harvest. That's just how things were. Made us tough, though. Made us appreciate what we got.
