INTRO
Before we learn how to strike or block in Arnis, we start with something more important — the basic stances. These help us stay balanced, focused, and ready to move anytime.
Arnis is the national martial art of the Philippines. It uses sticks, but more than that, it teaches discipline, respect, and control.
Let’s go through the six basic stances together.

1ST
First, the Ready Stance, or Handa.
Stand straight, feet shoulder-width apart. Hold the stick with both hands at each end. This is your relaxed but alert position — you're ready for action.
Next, the Attention Stance, or Pugay.
Put your feet together and place your right hand on your left chest. Keep the stick upright beside you. This shows respect to your opponent, your teacher, and the art itself.

Then, we have the Courtesy Bow.
Just bow your head a little while keeping eye contact. It's a small but meaningful sign of respect.
Now, the Fighting Stance.
Step one foot back, bend your knees, and shift your weight for balance. Hold the stick diagonally across your body. This stance gets you ready to defend or attack.

Next is the Forward Stance.
Step one foot forward and bend your front knee. Your back leg stays straight. This gives power and reach to your strikes.
Lastly, the Backward Stance.
Step one foot back, bend your front knee slightly, and shift your weight to your back leg. This helps you move away quickly and stay ready to counter.

They may look simple, but they build your foundation. Keep practicing, and remember — Arnis is not just about fighting. It's about discipline, respect, and always being ready.
