Nowadays, people are 90% online or in social media most of the time, to which a lot of shady individuals are taking advantage of: they are scammers. It may sound scary, but with awareness you can stay safe online!
Here are ways to be safe and be aware of scammers online:
Number 1—Always beware of suspicious people messaging you.
Most often, scammers will send fake messages or emails, that look like from someone you may know, like your boss or your delivery rider even. They will take advantage of this to scare you into giving your confidential information: such as passwords.
Don't click suspicious links, and always double check the sender whether it is someone you know or not.
Number 2—Use strong and unique passwords.
Use a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols to create a strong password of your accounts. Make sure to not re-use passwords, and avoid creating passwords that they can easily crack. Some examples:
• your birthday (02-02-04)
• name of your dog (Browny)
Number 3—Watch out for any advertisements that are "too good to be true"
Some smart scammers will use ads to trick you, like a free smartphone, high paying job, or a cure for any illnesses.
Be skeptical and do research first, remember: if it sounds too good to be true, then maybe it is.
Number 4—Never, ever, post or share any of your sensitive information anywhere especially online.
Information such as your passwords, PINs, should never be shared in texts, or in social media.
Now these are some ways to be safe online. Always remember to be cautious, do your research first before believing anything suspicious. Most importantly, it is vital to also talk and share awareness with your friends and family; helping each other to stay informed is one of the best defenses.
Scammers take advantage of confusion, pressure, and tricks — but by staying alert, questioning anything that seems suspicious, and practicing good online habits, you can protect yourself and the people you care about.
