Handball is a fast-paced, dynamic, and very physical sport. While it’s not one of the most dangerous sports, there are definitely some risks to keep in mind. First, it’s a contact sport. Pushing, blocking, and physical contact between players happen all the time, especially on defense. This can cause bumps, falls, and joint injuries. There are also lots of sudden movements: quick changes of direction, stops, and jumps. All of this increases the risk of ankle sprains and even more serious injuries like torn ligaments in the knee, which is pretty common in handball. Another factor is the ball itself. Throws can be very powerful, and if the ball hits a player’s body or face, it can cause bruises or even a concussion, though that doesn’t happen very often. Finally, there are falls. When shooting or defending, players often end up on the floor. If they don’t fall correctly, they can hurt themselves.
