I published my first novel, "The Time of the Hero," in 1963. So, I have been writing since I was a young man. Oscar: Well, my books are translated into many languages. However, I haven't gained a massive readership in every single country yet. But I am always hopeful! On the other hand, I am very popular in Europe and Latin America. Oscar: No, I didn't. In fact, I studied law and literature at the University of San Marcos. But my passion for stories was always there. Oscar: Yes, I have. I ran for President of Peru in 1990. However, I didn't win the election. It was a challenging but important experience. Oscar: Oh, yes. Before I could make a living from my books, I worked as a journalist and a professor to earn money.
