"If you need something, go to the market; but don't create a need just because you went to the market." Imam Al-Ghazali (RA) once wrote that when you leave your home with the intention of buying a specific item, purchase only that item from the market. If you need something else, return home, make a fresh intention, and then go again. These were the wise budgeting principles of the elders. However, the shopping mall culture and online shopping have ingrained a habit of creating needs and desires upon seeing items. People go out to buy yogurt and end up purchasing an entire store.
