It was almost midnight when Daniel reached the old farmhouse he had rented. The place stood at the edge of a forgotten forest, surrounded by crooked trees and endless darkness. The moment he pushed the front door open, a cold breath of air brushed across his face as if the house exhaled… welcoming him inside. The lights flickered weakly when he turned them on. The wooden floor creaked under his every step. He could hear the wind outside, but something about the silence inside felt wrong — unnaturally heavy, like the air was listening. Daniel placed his keys on the table and walked into the kitchen for water. As he filled the glass, he felt it — a slow, icy exhale against the back of his neck. He froze. He didn’t move. He didn’t breathe. And then he turned around. No one was there. His heartbeat thudded painfully. He walked quickly back to the living room… and that’s when he saw it. On the dusty floorboards were wet, small footprints, leading from the front door to the staircase. He hadn’t stepped in water. No one else was inside. And the prints were fresh. His hands shook as he slowly followed them up the stairs. The higher he climbed, the colder the air became, until it felt like he was walking into a freezer. The footprints stopped at the door of the guest bedroom — a door he distinctly remembered locking earlier. Now it was half-open. The room was pitch black except for a faint slice of moonlight seeping through the window. The smell inside was damp… old… rotten. Daniel stepped back instinctively. Then he felt it again. A cold breath. Right on his neck. He spun around — nothing. Panic rising, he ran to his bedroom and slammed the door shut. He grabbed his phone for the flashlight, but the screen glitched, white static lines spreading across it. Then, through the speaker, a soft, broken voice whispered: “…Why did you come back…?” Daniel’s knees nearly gave out. Very slowly, he lifted his eyes toward the mirror on the wall. His reflection wasn’t alone. Behind him stood a woman — drenched in shadows, hair tangled, eyes hollow and endless. Her cracked smile stretched unnaturally wide as she reached her hand toward him. Daniel tried to scream, but his voice never came. The next morning, the owner found Daniel’s phone recording on the floor. The last thing captured was his trembling voice: “…she was standing behind me the whole time…”
