Hi and welcome to our midweek cyber security podcast. I’m Rifat Al Mortoza and up next, I’ll be your commentator. Today, we’re discussing a surging cyber risk — ransomware attacks. The attacks are becoming more common, and are not limited to large companies. Hospitals, schools, and ordinary people like you and me are suffering. So why is this so important? Ransomware so-called ransomware encrypts your files and requires them to be paid. Failure to pay the ransom also may mean that the attackers will still hold your files ransom - or release them publicly. This issue results in loss of confidence, financial loss and, sometimes, even loss of life. Main Content But first, the basics: What is ransomware? It is a form of malware, or malicious software, that prevents you from accessing your files or your computer altogether. It then requests payment, usually in a digital currency like Bitcoin, to unlock them. The majority of ransomware does its damage by encrypting files. Picture waking up one day, and finding that all your pictures, files and documents have been encrypted. Then you get a message that says, “Pay $1,000 in Bitcoin, or you’ll never see your files again.” That’s how ransomware works. Now, how does ransomware spread? There are a few common ways: Phishing emails — Persuading victims to click a link or download a piece of malicious software. Weak Passwords – Simple passwords can be easily figured out by hackers. Old software — Systems without the most up-to-date software are easy prey. Let me point to some examples from the real world. In 2017, the WannaCry ransomware was disseminated across the world within a day. More than 200,000 computers in 150 countries were infected. In the UK, the nation's hospitals, run by the National Health Service (NHS), were hit hard. Physicians were unable to retrieve their patients’ records, and surgeries and emergency care were postponed. Conclusion Finally, in 2021, the Colonial Pipeline attack shut the fuel supply on the whole East Coast of the United States. The corporate has to pay more tham$4 million to resume the work. This attack caused not only expenses but also millions of Megawatts of burned energy. All these examples demonstrate that ransomware isn’t just a financial threat. It can also be connected to health, safety, and even the nation. What should you do to protect yourself? Cybersecurity experts provide several simple recommendations: back up your files; use strong passwords and multi-factor authentication; update your software; be cautious about the internet. Any smart device can be attacked, as said by cybersecurity speaker Mikko Hypponen. Ransomware is a vast and dangerous threat nowadays. It locks your files, follows phishlng and spreads weak passwords and out-of-date software, and can destroy you and your firm. Furthermore, it forces you to make multiple payments and can destroy your health and even your nation. WannaCry and Colonial Pipeline real-life cases are provided as live examples. The only method to protect yourself against the threat is to follow preventive measures. Regular backups, robust passwords, software updates, and online protection are the keys. Thanks for participating in the cybersecurity Podcast. Be healthy, be cautious about anything, and always remember that cybersecurity is your objective.
