Rozy
Precious NnennaによるLong ago in Japan, in a small fishing village by the coast, there lived a humble fisherman named Urashima Tarō. He was not rich, but he was respected for his kindness and honesty.
One afternoon, while walking along the shore, Urashima saw a group of boys tormenting a turtle they had caught. They tied ropes around its shell, dragging it through the sand for their amusement.
Urashima’s heart burned with anger.
“Stop this at once!” he shouted. “Life is sacred—whether small or great. If you wish to be treated kindly, treat other creatures with the same kindness.”
Ashamed, the boys fled, leaving the turtle behind. Urashima gently untied the ropes and set the creature free.
That evening, as he returned to his small hut, a messenger from the local lord arrived. To Urashima’s surprise, he was invited to the palace of the region’s princess, Otohime.
When he arrived, the princess greeted him warmly. “Word of your kindness has reached me,” she said. “You spared a helpless creature when others chose cruelty. A man with such a heart deserves honor.”
She welcomed him into her court. Days turned into weeks as Urashima enjoyed her hospitality—fine food, music, and companionship unlike anything in his village. It felt like a dream of peace and joy.
Yet one day, Urashima bowed before her.
“My lady, I am grateful for your kindness, but I cannot stay. My parents, my village—they are waiting. I must return to them.”
The princess’s eyes softened with sadness. She handed him a small, beautifully decorated box.
“Take this with you. Guard it well, but never open it. Promise me.”
Urashima nodded, thanked her deeply, and returned home.
