When a person leaves this world, the ancestors demand answers.
And so the elders—guardians of ancient law—walk to the home of the dead,
their coral beads trembling, their staffs striking the ground
as if waking spirits beneath the earth.
The family watches with fear tightening their chests.
For they know what comes next.
Two young men step forward—
the ones chosen to cross the line between life and the unseen.
They cut the fingernails of the dead, tie them to a long palm branch
with black nylon that whispers in the wind.
Ikpeshi believes that in that moment,
the spirit awakens inside the branch…
ready to reveal the truth.
The branch begins to move.
Slowly at first.
Then violently.
Pulling the young men like puppets in the hands of something unseen.
If it hits the wall—
the dead was a witch.
If it touches the water tank—
the dead was pure.
Families hold their breath.
Reputations, futures, even bloodlines hang in the balance.
But on this day, the ritual is interrupted by a voice stronger than fear.
A Catholic priest—Rev. Father Augustine—
walks into the storm of tradition and shouts,
“Stop! This is not God’s work!”
The elders rise like provoked lions.
They warn him that any family who refuses the test
will have daughters who never give birth.
The village cracks into two halves—
faith against tradition,
fear against conviction.
And in the center stands one grieving family,
their hearts torn apart.
Obey the elders and betray their faith?
Or obey the priest and risk a curse
that could haunt their daughters forever?
The tension becomes fire.
The villagers shout.
The elders threaten.
The priest refuses to bend.
And the branch—
still holding the spirit of the dead—
lies on the ground between them all,
like a silent judge waiting for its verdict.
Then, from that trembling family,
a voice rises.
Not from the elders.
Not from the priest.
But from the daughter—
a young woman with fear in her eyes
and courage in her bones.
She chooses dignity over terror.
Her brother stands with her.
And their defiance echoes through the village
like thunder breaking harmattan sky.
In that moment, even the elders feel the earth shift.
The curse loses its power.
And the ancient fear that ruled Ikpeshi
begins to crumble.
