Every year, our environment continues to suffer because of pollution, deforestation, and the increasing amount of waste we throw away. But even in the middle of this crisis, we still have the power to make a difference. And that begins with simple everyday actions that anyone can do.
One of the best examples is proper waste segregation.
Proper waste segregation means separating our trash correctly based on the type of waste. It may look like a small action, but it has a huge impact in reducing pollution, keeping our surroundings clean, and protecting our planet.
Biodegradable waste includes everything that can rot or decompose such as food scraps, leaves, and fruit peels. These can be turned into compost that becomes useful fertilizer for plants.
Recyclable waste includes plastic bottles, papers, cardboard, cans, and glass materials that can still be processed and reused. When we recycle, we reduce the need for new materials, which saves energy, protects natural resources, and helps reduce greenhouse gases.
Non-biodegradable or residual waste includes items that cannot be recycled or composted. These must be properly collected and disposed of so they do not mix with other waste and cause more damage to the environment.
By simply separating our garbage at home, in school, or in our community, we help reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. Less waste means less pollution. Less pollution means cleaner air, cleaner water, and a healthier planet. And all of these contribute to slowing down the effects of climate change.
Climate action does not always require big moves. It begins in the simplest habits—throwing our trash responsibly, reducing plastic use, recycling, and taking care of our environment. Small actions, when done by many people, create a powerful impact.
As students, we have a responsibility not only to learn but also to take part in protecting the world we live in. By practicing proper waste segregation, we set an example for others and help build a cleaner and greener future.
