But today, experts are proposing a revolutionary shift. We need to move from just "survival" to "Operational Resilience." This means ensuring that essential infrastructure—like hospitals and control centers—can stay 100% functional even after a severe seismic event.
At the "Building Resilience" conference, Dr. Carlos Pisicali, representing Earthquake Protection Systems (EPS), introduced the key to this new standard: Seismic Isolation technology. Simply put, seismic isolators are high-performance devices installed between the building’s foundation and its superstructure. When the ground shakes, these devices act as a buffer, preventing most of the seismic energy from reaching the building itself.
The flagship device from EPS is the Triple Friction Pendulum, or FTP Isolator. It's an engineering marvel that uses a simple, yet powerful concept: the pendulum. It relies on gravity and friction to effectively dissipate—or burn off—the earthquake's energy. What makes it truly innovative is its adaptive design featuring three independent sliding surfaces. This allows it to respond intelligently to different earthquake levels: For moderate tremors, only the first pendulum activates, protecting sensitive equipment. If a stronger earthquake hits, the other two pendulums engage. This allows the structure to move in a controlled way, significantly reducing damage.
The proof of this technology is undeniable, especially in critical infrastructure like hospitals and bridges. A compelling case study comes from the devastating 2023 Turkish earthquakes. Hospitals in Adana and Elazig, which were equipped with EPS isolators, maintained 100% operability. Meanwhile, surrounding buildings were either collapsed or suffered irreparable damage.
This brings us to the core economic argument: Seismic isolation is a protection of your investment. While a standard building might suffer damage costing 30% to 70% of its replacement value, the Continuous Functionality Standard aims to limit that damage to less than 2%. This ensures rapid re-occupancy and prevents catastrophic financial losses. The Triple Friction Pendulum isn't just a safety device; it's an enabling technology for resilience. It ensures structures don't just survive an earthquake, but emerge with minimal damage and, most importantly, fully operational. It truly represents the next generation in seismic engineering.
