Seeing Yourself Tomorrow Many people find it hard to imagine what their future selves will be like. If the person we will become feels like a stranger, it is difficult to make good choices today that will help us later. Without this connection, planning ahead and setting goals can feel less important and we may focus only on what is happening right now. Research shows that for some people, thinking about their future self is similar to thinking about someone they don’t really know. When people see their present and future selves as very different, two problems often appear. First, they want pleasure straight away. They look for quick and easy answers and avoid things that take effort or time. Second, they delay or avoid tasks they don’t enjoy, such as homework or revision. For them, the present moment feels more important than the future, which can lead to careless behaviour. Studies also show that when people feel closer to their future selves, they are more likely to make choices that bring long-term benefits and help them resist the temptation of instant rewards. When we connect emotionally with the person we will become, we start to make wiser choices. We might save money for later life, eat more healthily or exercise to stay fit. We can also stop negative habits that could cause problems in the future. Sometimes this means making small sacrifices, like waking up early to revise for exams or to train for sport instead of staying in bed. By seeing our future selves as part of who we are today, we realise that every choice we make now is an investment in tomorrow. Each step we take, however small, helps us build a stronger, healthier and more fulfilled life.
